## Overview

A SEP is a package that holds several [SEQ](/formats/seq/) data files. The SEQ data files are then managed as one file.[^ff43]

A program accesses one SEQ in a SEP by two numbers.[^ff43]

The first number is the ID returned when the SEP is opened. The second is the SEQ number.[^ff43]

The access functions are described in the Run-Time Library Reference.[^ff43]

## Structure

The SEP header has the following fields:[^ff44]

Table: SEP header

| Field | Byte count |
| --- | --- |
| ID (SEQp) | 4 |
| Version | 2 |

Each SEQ in the package follows with its own header:[^ff44]

Table: SEQ entry in a SEP

| Field | Byte count |
| --- | --- |
| SEQ ID | 2 |
| Resolution of quarter note | 2 |
| Tempo | 3 |
| Rhythm | 2 |
| Data size | 4 |
| Score data | Any |
| End of SEQ | 3 |

Figure 200 gives the tempo field as 3 bytes for SEQ 0 and 2 bytes for SEQ 1.[^ff44]
