--- title: VAG (PS Single Waveform Data) type: format summary: ADPCM waveform data of one sampled sound. category: File formats info: Extension = .VAG info: ID = VAGp --- ## Overview VAG is the PlayStation single waveform data format. It holds ADPCM-encoded data of a sampled sound such as a piano note, an explosion or music, and its typical extension in DOS is ".VAG". Several VAG files are managed as one group in a [VAB](/formats/vab/) file.[^ff45] ## Structure A VAG file has a 48-byte header (4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 12 + 16 bytes) followed by the waveform data. The header gives the data size in bytes and the sampling frequency and also holds a 16-byte name. The fields and their byte counts are shown below.[^ff45] Table: VAG format | Field | Byte count | | --- | --- | | ID (VAGp) | 4 | | Version | 4 | | Reserved | 4 | | Data size (Bytes) | 4 | | Sampling frequency | 4 | | Reserved | 12 | | Name | 16 | | Waveform data | Any | ## References [^ff45]: Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
